Engine Rebuild is Important Part of Classic Car Restoration

Every year we take cars to show our work.Classic car restoration work can generally be divided into three main areas of repairs: mechanical, body and interior. As you carry out a restoration, you take care of each of these systems and you wind up with a car that looks like new again. Dealing with the car's engine is a big part of mechanical restoration.
While some experts say that the cosmetic aspects of a restoration — the bodywork and upholstery — are the most difficult phases of a restoration, there is nothing easy about dealing with your car's engine. Most true classic car restorers are interested in rebuilding a car's original engine or finding an exact, period-correct replacement.
Usually, the home restorer will "yank" the engine out of a car, disassemble it, take it to a machine shop for machining, find or order new parts, install the new parts after the machine shop is done, put the rebuilt engine back in the car and test and tune its operation. Although you can mail-order high-performance "crate" engines for American cars, there aren't many catalogs for complete, original MG TF engines like the one that mechanic Vince Sauberlich is seen tuning up here.
There aren't many mail-order sources of authentic older engines, although there have been some companies that catalog Model T and Model A Ford engines and several shops offer mail order rebuilds of British sports car engines. Promar Precision Engines, based in Paterson, New Jersey noted a nationwide resurgence of classic car restorations and started a program designed to meet the demand.
The company sent representatives to car shows to promote the idea it could rebuild classic car engines shipped to it.
Promar was already a remanufacturing company serving customers worldwide with a complete line of rebuilt and remanufactured engines, cylinder heads, crankshafts, engine restoration services and components.
It tried to create a "mail order" business in doing older engines shipped to its New Jersey location. Promar still offers the highly specialized service, but is not giving Classic Car Engine Rebuilding Services the same promotional push they got nine years ago.
Shipping engines is expensive and that is a big reason that most hobbyists wind up yanking their engine and relying on local machine shops and rebuilders. Taking an engine out of a car and stripping it down requires hours. Most "general contractors" can do this work themselves if they have an engine hoist.
Removing an engine is a job most hobby restorers can do. It takes at least four to six hours strip accessories like the carburetor, generator, starter and fuel pump off an engine, carefully detach its electrical connections and plumbing, remove all fasteners that bolt it in the chassis and lift the engine safely out of a vehicle with a hoist.
Ted is using an engine balancer that Eastwood sells to ease the job of lifting. You'll remove the car's hood and any sheet metal that's in the way of the engine coming out. Then disconnect the wires, cables, fluid lines and linkages that go from car to engine. Your car's factory shop manual will list all steps to take an engine out. Follow the instructions in the manual carefully.An attached garage makes your home functional and your lifestyle easier. Having an attached garage means that you can enter and leave your car without going out into the elements.
Building an attached garage has many more considerations, however, than a detached model. It also has different cost factors, which are impacted by things like size, style, interior finishing, and external siding.
Technically, you could have your new attached garage built in any size you desire, but there are a few standard sizes. Like any build, the construction area must first be cleared and prepped. This varies depending on the condition of the lot beside your home. If it is level and cleared, the excavation will be less invasive than if you need to clear and level the lot.
Typically, excavation for a garage simply involves clearing the site of any landscaping and ensuring a level area for the foundation. An attached garage needs access to your home. After framing your garage, consider how the inside walls will be finished. Some people leave them unfinished and uninsulated because the garage is only used for storage. Doing so can make your garage more comfortable and provide more choices later for how you use the space, such as enabling you to install shelving, workspaces, and other options.
The exterior of your garage walls also needs finishing. Because the garage is attached to the rest of your home, it is typical to use the same siding and trim material you have on the rest of your home to finish the garage. This produces the most cohesive look for the property and makes the garage look like it was built with the house, rather than as an add-on. This is especially important if your garage will have the same height as the rest of the property because the roofs are often joined for a seamless appearance. Switching materials suddenly at the garage can lower the curb appeal of the property.

Every component in your garage project adds to the bottom line, and there is flexibility regarding how high end the project can be. Alternatively, you can save money by cutting out or reducing nonessentials like windows or textured and painted walls, which could be added at a later date, instead of having unfinished concrete and drywall. When considering the garage structure itself, unless working with the assembly of a metal barndominium style structure, the two options for the garage walls are timber frame and concrete blocks.

Once the concrete walls are up, you will still need to have the contractor install a timber frame to run the electrical work and any plumbing through it, on top of which the drywall will be installed. CMU is going to cost a lot more for materials and labor. Finding contractors with CMU experience is not as easy as finding contractors who excel at timber frame.
A CMU frame structure will also take longer to build than timber frame, and the thickness of concrete blocks adds inches to the entire structure, which results in an extra cost—from foundation to roofing.

No matter what final finish you elect, most building codes dictate that you, at the minimum, have drywall installed because of its fire resistance. For the construction of the garage roof, a support framework is placed on top of the frame for the rest of your structure.
For the most common type of installation used in a simple roof, trusses are placed on each end of this support structure, and they are joined by a support or ridge beam; and from there the rafters are added. Once the rafters are in place, it is common to secure sheets of plywood followed by underlayment, and finally, the shingles are added. A rain gutter system will direct the flow of water down the corners of the garage in pipes to spots about two feet away from the foundation.

To maintain any energy efficiency garnered by your choice of materials for the walls, you will have to finish out the ceiling to help insulate the garage. The more time you spend in the garage, the more critical insulation becomes to you. Not all garages have windows, but if you plan on spending time in the garage, it is nice to have natural light.
Despite the additional cost, most detached garages have at least one window, and a larger 2-car garage with a workshop area or storage features could have as many as three windows.
